It All Started on Twitter

Today at work we conducted Virtual Team Leadership training for a group of Sales Directors who are managing remote teams.  This is something new for them.  Up until this year, they were mainly managing a workforce that reported into an office each day.    We brought in a consultant who specializes in virtual team topics to facilitate the session.   The day went extremely well. The training exceeded everyone's expectations and the Directors walked away with many actionable ideas that will help them be more effective on their jobs.  But what I really want to share in this story is how this came about.

While we were sourcing for someone with relevant expertise to help us with this session, I noticed that I had a new follower on twitter.  She had probably read something I had written in a blog or discussion forum about virtual teams, so she started following me.  I clicked her profile and saw that almost all of her tweets were about virtual team leadership, so I started following her.  I clicked on a few of the links in her tweets and read some of the articles on virtual teams that she was sharing with her followers.  They seemed like just the types of things we needed and many of them were articles that she had written herself.   I passed this information onto one of my team members and asked her to call the consultant to explore her capabilities.  A few days later, my team member called me saying she thought this would be a could person for our need, so we set up meeting with her.   After a few discussions with us sharing information about our audience and her sharing information about the work she could do, we decided to work together.   She did an excellent job for us today.  We will likely be working together again on future projects...and it all started on twitter.
